Hour building in Greece – island hopping from Crete in a Piper PA-28 Turbo Arrow

Eight days, twelve flight hours and a route across the Aegean that you fly yourself.

From Chania on Crete you fly the Piper PA-28 Turbo Arrow yourself: to Kastellorizo, Greece's easternmost island, across the Aegean to Syros, and from there on to Mykonos, Santorini, Paros, Milos and Kythira. Twelve flight hours are included; the route is our suggestion and can be changed freely. You stay in three boutique hotels: The Tanneries in Chania, the Poseidon on the harbour of Kastellorizo and the Argini in Ermoupoli. Without a pilot's licence, a professional pilot flies you.

THE HOUSES

Where you stay

The former tanneries of The Tanneries right on the water in Chania

Tabakaria, Chania – Crete

The Tanneries Hotel & Spa

The house

Where leather was tanned for almost two centuries, you now stay right on the sea. Four listed 19th-century tanneries in the historic Tabakaria quarter have been converted into a boutique hotel with just 20 suites, all overlooking the Aegean. Stone walls, high ceilings and timber beams meet a pared-back design of concrete, glass, pale wood and leather.

Pool, spa & dining

The old dyeing basins are now a pool and whirlpool, joined by a spa with hammam and indoor pool. At the Periplous Seaside restaurant you enjoy modern Cretan cuisine on the terrace above the water.

Setting

The Venetian old town and the harbour of Chania are just a few minutes away, and yet it is wonderfully quiet here. Chania airport is about 12 km or 17 minutes away.

The neoclassical houses of the Poseidon Hotel on the harbour of Kastellorizo

Harbour of Kastellorizo

Poseidon Hotel

The house

A family-run hotel right on the colourful harbour of Kastellorizo. The Poseidon is spread across several restored neoclassical buildings, just a few steps from the water and from the cafés and tavernas of the waterfront. Outside, the typical island colours glow; inside, it is rustic-chic with modern comfort.

Rooms

There are studios, apartments, suites and villas for up to eight people, all with a kitchen or kitchenette, many with a balcony and views over the harbour and the sea.

Breakfast & hosts

The generous breakfast with Greek and Anatolian-inspired specialities is especially popular with guests, as is the warm hospitality of the hosts. The ideal base for trips to the Blue Grotto and for relaxed days on Greece's easternmost island.

Vaporia, Ermoupoli – Syros

Argini Hotel

The house

An 1853 mansion in the elegant Vaporia quarter, in the heart of Ermoupoli. It was built for the family of Grigoris Paikos, a figure of the Greek War of Independence; today the Argini is a five-star boutique hotel with just eleven rooms and suites. Original ceiling and wall frescoes meet fine marbles and design from houses such as Poltrona Frau, Flos and Gessi.

Wellness & dining

To unwind there is a heated indoor pool with jacuzzi, a hammam and a roof terrace with a fire pit. The Elexis restaurant cooks cosmopolitan dishes with produce from the island. With its indoor pool, hammam and fire pit, the Argini is an ideal choice in winter too.

Setting

The town hall, Miaouli Square and the Apollon Theatre are just a few minutes' walk away. Syros airfield is about 4 km or 10 minutes away.

ENTRY & HEALTH REQUIREMENTS

As of: 17 September 2026 – Greece is part of the EU and the Schengen Area, and German citizens do not need a visa. A passport, provisional passport, ID card, provisional ID card or children's passport is sufficient for entry; apart from the provisional ID card, the documents may have expired no more than a year ago. The same document is needed for the flight home. There are no compulsory vaccinations. Travellers with German statutory health insurance should bring their European Health Insurance Card, which covers urgent treatment; medical care is good on the mainland and more limited on the smaller islands. We still recommend travel health insurance that includes repatriation. Imports and exports follow EU rules: defence sprays are prohibited, and antiquities and archaeological finds may only be taken out of the country with permission from the Ministry of Culture. Payment is in euros. Pickpocketing is common in Athens and Piraeus, above all during the travel season and in busy places.
